Oat Bran to the rescue

It really works! As I explained in a previous post, my burdock plants were being chewed to the nub by snails. As soon as a new leaf would appear it would be chewed off by the next day. I applied a heavy layer of oat bran, and as you can see in the photo, they are winning the fight! Oat bran still works when it rains. If you overhead water you just have to be careful not to wash it away . . .

Transplanting heaven

What amazing weather! Today we are going to Alameda to transplant the first batch of tomatoes. The night temperatures have been so cold it’s been risky to leave the seedlings out to harden off but they are looking good and are complaining of crowded living conditions so it’s time to get going. My ‘Japanese Farm Food’ test garden has produced some sweet eating! We have harvested the Beka Santoh cabbage and used it in a salad and the Komatsuna mustard spinach in a stir-fry. They were both sweet and are starting to bolt just now. The turnips and daikon have quite a ways to go. I pulled out the tiniest turnip the other day and enjoyed a tiny taste. It was good!
