We have been asked over and over whether it is a good idea to have a veggie garden what with the drought and all . . .
So, I went to the experts to find out what they had to say. A farmer at the farmers’ market said that he thought that a home gardener who was focussed on just watering their plants when they needed it would be much more efficient with water than he could be on his 100’s of feet of rows.
I contacted the Conservation Dept of EBMUD and they directed me to page 4 of their Lawn Conversion & Irrigation Rebates brochure. You’ll see that they issue rebates for lawn conversion into a vegetable garden. The woman at the office assured me that EBMUD sees vegetable gardening as sustainable.
Now that ‘whether to’ is settled, the next topic for discussion is ‘how to’ garden in the most water efficient way. We advocate ample mulching and burying ‘watering pots’ for deep watering. See our growing tips sheet ‘Watering your Tomatoes’ for instructions.
There are many, many ideas for conserving water in your garden. Send us your methods and experiences. We all need to work together to make it work . . .
